Water is the most precious gift of nature. It has no taste, no smell and no colour. It is found everywhere and the other its other name is life. We find it in tanks, ponds, wells, rivers and springs. We know that almost three-fourth of the earth is water. Now it is time to focus on saving water to protect the environment and to ensure adequate supply of water for our future generation.

For our daily usage, we use overhead tank to store water so that it can be used during the day as per requirement in Kitchens, Toilets, bathrooms, Gardens etc. Generally,  we use electric motor to send the water into overhead tank but we could not know that how much water level is there in the Tank during filling up the tank so that we could switch off the motor before overflowing. When water level is reached at top level of the tank, the water is overflowed through overflow pipe but before we switch off the motor, we would have been already witnessed wasted of much water. Installation of water tank overflow Alarm:

I have enough knowledge of Electrical Circuits and Electrical equipment, therefore, I had installed it myself.

I advise you to get it fitted & installed by local electrician known to you if you have no basic knowledge of Electrical Circuits & Equipment. But you can do it your self if you have basic knowledge of Electrical wiring & circuits. 

For those who are interested to install it, I would try to explain it in simplest terms as follows :

Task : To Install Overhead Water Tank Overflow Alarm.

Material Required : 

1. Water Tank Overflow Alarm (You can buy it here). 
2. Strong insulated Twin Wire of length from top of your overhead tank to Pump Motor starter or switch location.
3. Insulation Tape to cover joints.

Tools Required :

1. Phase Tester or Screw driver
2. Wire Cutter/Pliers.
3. Hammer & Screw.
4. Medium duty Drilling Machine with 4-5 mm drill bit or Wall Punch. (This is required only in case you need to install Alarm set on Wall) 

Financial Implication/Cost : Rs 400 to 500 Depending upon distance of your motor SW/Starter to overhead tank and quality of Wire used.

Execution/Procedure :

1. Select a suitable place near your Pump Motor starter/switch and fix the alarm unit on the wall with guitty & screw.
2. Join one end of wires to be taken to water tank with two (Short length) wires coming out of alarm unit properly and insulate with tape. 

1. Cut the plug from the AC input wire of Alarm unit and remove 4-5 inch of outer insulation of both the wires. Connect Red wire with starter MCB top connection or top. If your motor is operating without starter then no need to cut the alarm plug rather just connect it using Multi Extension Plug (see the picture above).
2. Connect black wire with the neutral which is generally available in starter motor or switch board as the case may be. Please ensure to switch off the mains supply before carrying out these activities.
3. Just for checking the right connectivity & serviceability, switch on your pump motor. A Red Light will glow at alarm unit indicating availability of power supply to Alarm unit. Now short or join other end of two wires to be taken to top and Alarm. It should start sounding the warning for water overflow which indicates right connectivity. Switch Off the Pump Motor.
4. Switch Off the Pump Motor and route the wires from Alarm unit to the top of your over head water tank by taking the shortest and safe route. In case of Plastic Tank, you can make a two holes top on the tank to insert the wires hanging inside the tank just below the overflow pipe so that alarm can be worked before overflowing the tank. In case of cementing tank, your can do it accordingly.

Testing :

The water over flow alarm is installed now and we can test it by switching On the Pump motor. A red light will glow on the Alarm unit indicating that the gadget is On. As soon as the water tank is filled till the open ended wires level, a short/connection will be extended to the Alarm unit and it will start giving an audio warning to switch off the water pump. When we switch off pump by MCB or switch the supply to the Alarm will also be switched off and it will stop the warning sound. 

Advantages: Saving Water, Stop damaging walls & terrace.
